Early on I was given an opportunity to do an early pass on #elektra. Such a treat to be able to help design and paint this character. This version was meant to show that she has been in the void for a while and her costume has changed through wear and tear and fixes and adjustments. This piece will also be included in the upcoming The Art of Deadpool & Wolverine

Here’s another Wolverine variant from the Art of Deadpool & Wolverine! This was incredibly fun to paint, trying to hit the comic accurate proportions!

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE film concept art series: BABY DEADPOOL! I was able to do the final design for this cutie. I took inspiration from my experience as a dad and wanted to infuse life into this character, making him (or her?) lovable, squishable, & yet still undeniably Deadpool. I would’ve loved to see a small unicorn plushie! Credit goes to the costume department for doing the 1st pass

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE film concept art series! I had the honor of doing concept versions of the yellow & blue costume of Wolverine for the film. This was DEFINITELY a fun one to explore during preproduction. The final (Amazing!) design you see in the film was done by Head of Visual Development @ryan_meinerding_art

Here’s is a Wolverine design image from the Art of Deadpool & Wolverine! So much fun working on this character for Kevin, Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds—and of course for Hugh Jackman! Such a dream come true seeing him in yellow and blue!

Starting off with Wolverinepool! Or Wolverpool, Deadverine? One of the variants that didn’t make the cut unfortunately. Costume designer @mayesrubeo More coming!

Early pass on #cassandranova. There was an emphasis on her fashion so I tried to give her this high fashion look but still is reminiscent of her comic look for this pass. Loved Emma Corrin’s performance.

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE film concept art series: ROB-POOL! This was me honoring my original boss & creator of Deadpool in @robliefeld During preproduction we played with fun variations of Deadpool’s costume for a fun sequence. So I had to create these versions playing with classic Liefeld-isms like exaggerated muscles, pouches, swords, shoulder pads, his original costume color breakups and original eye shapes. So much fun! Thanks Rob!

Here’s Elektra’s final costume concepts I did for costume designer @mayesrubeo. Deadpool & Wolverine brought many great opportunities to have fun and bring back beloved Marvel heroes from the 20th Century Fox era. I was super excited when I got assigned Elektra. It felt like a great opportunity to bring her back guns blazing and do a Void version of her that would incorporate design elements and aesthetics that match better the MCU style as we know it now, as her first movie came out nearly 20 years ago. Costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo wanted her to be powerful and sexy but without showing bare skin, so we kept away from exposing any mid drift and other feminine cliches from heroines from the past. It felt like an act of justice and female empowerment. Her belt was a node to Daredevil.

It’s one of my favourite concepts from this project and I think @jennifer.garner looks incredible on the screen rocking it!

In my last post I was honoring my 1st boss (& creator of Deadpool) in @robliefeld This post I show you how I honored MANY comic book legends during preproduction on working on the DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE film before there was even a script. I pitched a fun idea where Deadpool would jump through multiverses and arrive at the MCU, Marvel COMICS Universe! And each character would exist in the art style of a legendary comic book artist. Each who have inspired me greatly!

Can you name identify all of these legendary artists/creators?

This piece (& more) will also be included in the upcoming The Art of Deadpool and Wolverine.

Some of the early ideas I did for the Blade we meet in the void for Deadpool & Wolverine, more in the upcoming artbook!
I did a handful of others, and with all of mine I was mainly looking to get the flavor of the original Blade films but also thinking about where he might be as a slightly older guy now and in a different era/context, was also really fun to work a classic comic look homage in here too.
Blade is my favorite comicbook movie and one of my fav characters, so it was a dream to get to do some concepts for him, especially when knowing that the great @realwesleysnipes was returning to his iconic role

Here’s Ladypool final costume concept I did for costume designer @mayesrubeo in Deadpool & Wolverine. Doing Deadpool variants in the costume team was such a gift as fans and artists. It was a time to have fun, explore and just be crazy. One of my favourites, that made it into the film, is Ladypool. We wanted to pay homage to the comic representations, but we applied, as we usual do, a sense of realism, studying every single element of the suit, back and forth. Her proportions are quite different from the male version we all know and love, so we embraced the curves and the sinuosity on her new design.

It’s so great it turned out so beautifully, enhanced by the performance of @blakelively who brought her to life, giving us one of the most iconic shots from the film.

Here is a closeup on the Wolverine mask design from the Art of Deadpool & Wolverine. Such an amazing character to work on for such a fun movie!

This is a peek inside the HMU trailer on #deadpoolandwolverine. @wljames and @sean105 you are two of the most talented and patient people I have ever known. Even when the days are long and we are running on fumes, when we are chasing light, or catching lightning in a bottle, when I’m cranky and usually hungry … you both know before I say a word and have the playlist ready for all of it. I’m grateful beyond words.

The costume department on #DeadpoolAndWolverine was second to none. I can’t think of a more stressful line of work on a film like this. SO. MANY. COSTUMES. And prototypes. And no room for error. The work they do isn’t just design and fabrication, it’s engineering. These suits function as beautifully as they look. Sure it takes over an hour to pee, but the suit has saved me from more injuries than I can count. This whole supersuit journey started and continues with Russ Shinkle and his team at @film_illusions.

Huge thanks to tireless geniuses: Graham Churchyard, Mayes Rubio and Billy Lawless. Massive appreciation and awe to Ivo Coveny for making a NicePool suit (and many others, including 2099!!!!) beyond anyone’s wildest dreams and expectation.

And all my love, appreciation and thanks to the giant team behind the scenes at Pinewood and beyond working so hard to create, fix, pivot, change, patch and adjust what must feel like a thousand different supersuits every single day… what a team of heroes. You kept the wheels on the bus.

Kidpool!! Love how the costume ended up in the movie, the middle stitch and all! I remember getting only 1 comment from the illustration, along the lines of “ instead of guns lets put water pistols filled with p!ss”. Dont know who gave the note, but I think i can guess lol!

Here’s one of the final costume concepts for Dogpool, done under the guidance of the great @mayesrubeo . We have been sketching and exploring ideas for Dogpool for a while until Peggy was casted. She changed everything! We all fell in love with her immediately and her personality inspired us so much. @david_masson_sg and myself worked hand in hand on this character for a while, she turned out so great! In this version, Ryan wanted to cover her body less and showcase the elements of her body that make Peggy so unique. She gave us so many unforgettable scenes in the movie.

Cowboypool final costume concept for costume designer @mayesrubeo in Deadpool & Wolverine. One the coolest and craziest sequences in the film is the portal opening and arrival of an army of Deadpool variants. Cowboypool was one the first ones to be conceptualised. Mayes wanted to pay homage to the western genre. We got inspiration from great icons like Clint Eastwood. We adapted to shapes, materials and motifs to a more organic vibe. The Deadpool poncho pattern was even created in the traditional method of knitting. Turned out to be a guy with so much attitude!

Zenpool final costume concept for Deadpool & Wolverine. Zenpool is one of the many variants we worked on that made it to the film. It’s the only variant that has almost no red in its costume. We wanted him to have a sense of calmness, fluidity, martial arts master and Tibetan monk. He represents all opposite things the OG Deadpool is about. Mayes wanted to portray him in the middle of his daily practice.

Babypool final concept art for Deadpool & Wolverine. Babypool variant was well known by fans, and it was represented as a baby, bare body just wearing a mask, in the comic books. Ryan and Shawn envisioned more of a toddler for the character, with diapers and all but able to move around by himself. It was such fun to do a tiny hero suit. Mayes came up with the idea of feeding bottles instead of guns. We designed him in full detail and finishings, just like any other hero in the film. Babypool cast is Olin, Ryan 1 year old son, as credited in the film.

Callisto final costume concept for Deadpool & Wolverine. Callisto is a mutant character we got to see on screen on X-Men: The Last Stand, from the early stages of the MCU with 20th Century Fox. For Deadpool & Wolverine, we got the chance to revisit some of the mutants from the early Marvel days, as part of Cassandra’s henchmen in the Void. Mayes C. Rubeo wanted to give nods to the original character in the comics, so we added the punk rock flavour to it, we incorporated the colour palette as well. And also, the tattoos in her arms represent one of her powers, the ability to transform her arms into multiple and fierce tentacles. We did many mutant henchmen and I’ll be posting more on them very soon.

Psylocke final costume concept for Deadpool & Wolverine. Psylocke was another of the mutants chosen to be brought back in the Void, as part of Cassandra’s henchmen. She had already appeared in X-Men Apocalypse and The last stand. We wanted to give a more utilitarian and tactical vibe to the design, but in her iconic color palette and having the strap element as a nod to her comic book portrayal.
