In an interview with TVInsider, Damon Lindelof described the HBO Watchmen series will be” a remix of sorts.” As Damon Lindelof explained, the HBO series in only adding to the Watchmen world that has already been created:
“I’m not creating this world; I’m adding to a world already created…all I can do is stay true to the spirit of Watchmen and pray that it all works out. I owe everything to Watchmen, and it’s an honor to officially get the chance to pay off that debt.”
Damon Lindelof added that the events of Alan Moore’s Watchmen comic are still canon, but that they felt it was best to explore new stories rather than recreate Moore’s work:
“[It’s] still rooted in the world of the original, groundbreaking novel. Everything that happened in [that graphic novel] is canon. We can’t replicate the brilliance of it, but we can honor it by trying to do something original.”
“I’m not being flippant when I say that the answer is one. Does that mean that there isn’t going to be anymore Watchmen? Not necessarily. Does that mean that I will be working on subsequent seasons of Watchmen? I don’t know is the answer to that question.
We designed these nine episodes to be as self-contained as the original 12 issues. We wanted to feel like there was a sense of completeness, to resolve the essential mystery at hand. Obviously, there is a potential promise for the further exploration of the world but like the seasons of Leftovers that I did as opposed to Lost, which was designed to have cliffhanger finales and a promise of future storytelling.”
