Cavill spoke to Patrick Stewart about the role of Superman and what it means to him. The star explained that he sees portraying the character as a responsibility even when he’s not wearing the costume on set.
“I’ve always been a fan of Superman. With a character like that, you carry the mantle with you off set. And it becomes part of your public representation. When you meet children, children don’t necessarily see me as Henry Cavill, but they might see Superman, and there’s a responsibility which comes with that. Because it’s such a wonderful character, it’s actually a responsibility I’m happy to have and I hope that I get to play more of Superman in the years to come.”
“My life has changed dramatically because of it. And it has given me plenty of opportunity for roles, and yeah, it’s been one of those characters which changed the entire course of my career. I’m incredibly grateful for it, and it’s also taught me a lot about myself. He’s so good, he’s so kind, and when you start to compare yourself to him, because you’re playing him, you start to really look inwards. You say, ‘Am I a good person? Can I be a good enough person to play Superman?’ And if you ever hear a whisper in there which is like, ‘Hmm, hold on a second. Maybe not,’ then you adjust it, and you make sure you are a better person. I think that’s all we can do in life.”
"The amount of speculation, the stuff I read on the Internet, is extraordinary and sometimes frustrating. It’s when you see people stating stuff as fact. Like, “No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening."
"But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman. Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again."

(...) Cavill was a good choice, but the material was mostly bad. Man Of Steel was a pretty good start, but BVS ruined it.
Reboot in a stand alone film (...)
For director get Jeff Nichols, great director, and was considered for Aquaman, but didn't do it because it had to fit into the specific world of the DCEU, which was already established. Doing something more like The Batman, could allow him the freedom he needs.
