"Those characters are experts in the quantum realm.
In Ant-Man and the Wasp, they are trying everything in their power to safely enter the quantum realm and return back from it because they have evidence from the first film that Scott was able to do that. If he can do it, why can’t we?
If we do succeed in Ant-Man and the Wasp, then that does open a whole entire new multi-verse to enter into and play around in. I’m not the story creator, so I can’t tell you what they’re going to do with that. But I definitely see the potential there."
then that does open a whole entire new multi-verse to enter into and play around in

Their daughter, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), will suit up as the modern-day Wasp alongside ex-con-turned-superhero Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), but Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed has described Janet as "a very important character."
"It's fair to say if someone were to have spent thirtysomething years in the Quantum Realm and survived, it would have an effect," Reed told EMPIRE Magazine (via CBM). "What did she eat? All she eats is cereal called Quantum Krispies."
"The events of Captain America: Civil War gave us something clear, which is: what was Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyne's reaction to Scott having taken this technology out into the world in Civil War?" said director Peyton Reed. "We had a lot of fun playing around with that. And we play with size and scale a lot. I love the idea of Giant-Man."
"The events of Civil War, and how Scott reacted to that, have thrown a big wrench into the works," Reed said. "But his curiosity has been reawakened about the Quantum Realm and whether Janet's still alive down there."
"This is really her coming out party as a hero," Reed said of Evangeline Lilly's character. "Her power set is fantastic. She and Scott both shrink, but there the flying, and the fighting style of The Wasp is different from Ant-Man's."
