While talking with Total Film recently, Wan had this to say about why he decided to direct Aquaman:
“Let’s face it, [Aquaman is] the superhero that everyone makes fun of. There was a bit of reservation at the start about whether or not I should pursue this character. But the more I thought about it, I always love being the underdog. Coming from the horror genre, you’re always the underdog. So I got used to that mentality.”
Wan’s Aquaman definitely doesn’t look like a film that was helmed by a horror director, but one angle of his horror roots will definitely be apparent. Wan told the magazine that another exciting thing about directing the film were the underwater creatures:
“I said, ‘I can have monsters in there. Are you guys OK if I have monsters in there?’ They said, ‘Have monsters!'”
The director then went into detail about his thoughts on having the reputation of a horror director and how it’s a great way to break into the Hollywood industry:
“I love [horror]. It’s definitely the best way to break into the industry. I just became somewhat synonymous with it, so that people had a harder time seeing me for anything else outside of horror.
I just wanted to prove that I’m not just a horror filmmaker, I’m a filmmaker, period.”
I definitely have an opinion. Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. Its awesome… But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.
There’s definitely stories, even within the world we’ve created, that you can actually see other storylines [spinning off from] as well. There’s the Aquaman story, but then there’s the stories of the seven different kingdoms as well. I think those would be very fun to explore.
