One of the first things Production Designer Darren Gilford asked me to tackle on Tron: Legacy was a quick illustration of CIllian Murphy as the new Sark. I think it was meant to lure him to the production to reprise his role as the junior Dillinger. Given his absence from the movie I hope this illo isn’t the reason he passed! As Moebius has always been a huge hero of mine (and a kinder more gracious soul I’ve never met) I was thrilled to do a variation on his iconic costume. As usual I rough out a few variations and am pleased when my favorite is selected.

Tron: Ascension was Joe Kosinski’s direct sequel to Tron: Legacy. Unfortunately the failure of Disney’s Tomorrowland coupled with their purchases of Marvel and Lucasfilm marked a death nell for the project, as Disney decided their money was better spent on a more proven franchise. Resurrected a decade later as Tron: Ares, albeit without the original leads, it nevertheless kept Jared Leto in the Ares role, as well as the iconic Tri-Disk I designed for this earlier production, kept effectively intact. The original costumes I designed working directly with @tacojoekosinski and production designer Darren Gilford, as there wasn’t a Costume Designer attached by the time the show went down. Joe wanted the Dillinger costumes to reflect a more real-world interpretation of the Tron aesthetic, with toned-down lighting as they were intended for practical military use in the real world where signaling your location like a beacon wouldn’t be the most wise design choice. I came up with a multi-material approach, layering compression mesh over hard shell armor elements and molded rubber. The convertible top-inspired hood with a hard shell top gives him a distinctive silhouette that evokes the original Sark. This final version evolved from a more samurai-inspired look that was a little too fetishistic for Joe. Finally, Joe wanted Jared to have luminous sub-cutaneous tattoos based on Syd Mead’s iconic circuitry from Tron’s back in the original 1982 movie.

On the heels of Ares we have Zia (or Athena as she was renamed for Tron: Ares,) Ares’ second in command. Director Joe Kosinski’s directive again was to create something that evoked the feel of gridwear but with the light lines toned down enough to be convincing as practical military garb. After all, nothing says “target” like wearing a neon sign...
The tri-hex shape was a theme I was trying to weave through the Dillinger aesthetic, and it was working it into the back of the suit in the light lines connecting the shoulders and small of the back that led to the design of the Tri-Disk. Like in Ares’ suit, I also tried to work in a structural hood that I felt gave it a distinctive silhouette. Had it continued I would have relished working out the articulation to fold it into a compact shape at the back of the neck, borrowing from camping tents and automotive convertible tops.
