Eisenberg parle du film...

COLLIDER : One of my most anticipated movies of next year is Batman v Superman. I won’t ask you about the plot but I do want to know what did you think it was going to be like being part of the movie, prior to signing on, and what has it been like having done the movie and sort of – because there is a huge amount of interest in the film. What’s it been like for you?

EISENBERG: I’ve never been involved for something that is parsed to this degree. Whether it be something that someone says that has some tangential relation to the movie or the trailer images that are released. It was initially surprising and fortunately the movie is really wonderful. So when people are parsing what the individuals images maybe be, the takeaway is how interesting the movie looks and how wonderful it is. You know, the script is phenomenal. Written by Chris Terrio, who is just brilliant. And Zack Synder is just visually, masterful. And I think everything that’s been released and parsed within an in of its life has been received so well.

COLLIDER : Man of Steel is one of my favorite movies of the last few years. I love the movies so much. And everything I keep hearing about Batman v Superman is that Zack has crafted something wonderful. For you, when you were on set making it. Did you get the feeling that you were making this big movie? Or has Zack created this environment that has made you feel insulated from that kind of big budget, big movie pressure?

EISENBERG: The latter. Absolutely. The way he shoots things – at least, insofar as my scenes were concerned – was very specifically and very simply a lot of my scenes are dialogue driven and it felt like I was on any other kind of intimate movie set. So watching that trailer for the first time, was when I really got a good sense of the overall movie, the look, and I thought it was really incredible.

The environment on the set is one of respect and intimacy and allows the actors to do what actors do well even in the context of this huge and larger scope. And the production.

Shannon donne des éclaircissements...et évoque à demi-mot Doomsday !

Earlier this month, Michael Shannon told a funny story about getting trapped in a toilet on the set of Batman v Superman because he had "flippers" over his hands. This obviously led to speculation that he must be taking on a motion capture role as Doomsday (as has been rumoured), but the actor is now doing some pretty unconvincing damage control! "I wasn’t there," he claims in an interview with The Daily Beast. "It’s a really awkward situation—I’m in the trailer for a movie that I didn’t work on." Shannon still hasn't seen the trailer, so obviously isn't aware of the fact we've all seen him in the movie; he must have been on set to shoot those scenes as a corpse after all.

Instead, the actor has come up with a ludicrous claim (likely fed to him by the studio) that he does appear, but as a...ghost?! "The thing about the whole Krypton universe, apparently, is that even when you destroy them, there are ghosts. The first [film], Jor-El is there even though he’s been dead for lord knows how long. I went over and did some voice-over stuff because it’s like that ghost thing. But I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that. I get very nervous." None of this sounds even remotely convincing, and it becomes even harder to believe when the actor attempts to explain away that story about the flippers. "Somebody was asking me about this in New York and I made up some ridiculous bullshit answer about how my character Zod has flippers, and this went viral on the Internet or something and people have been asking me about that. That is so obviously a complete bullshit story, right? But people took it seriously."

Yeah, right. Anyway, here's where things get really interesting...the actor goes on to specifically mention Doomsday. It's said in a jokey way, but in doing so, has Shannon confirmed that's the role he's taking on? It's hard to say for sure, but he does appear to be getting mixed up between Zod and Doomsday during this interview, so I'd say it's certainly possible. "Maybe they should add it, I don’t know! Maybe in Part 3, Doomsday will have flipper hands. I mean, look—nothing would make me happier than to work with Zack [Snyder] again, he’s hysterical and he’s a lot of fun to work with."

Eisenberg parle encore de son personnage...

Speaking on his role as the villanous Lex Luthor, Eisenberg mentions that "in a lot of ways, Luthor is more of a stretch than any character you would do in an independent movie, which is normally the place you stretch. So in that way it was not at all compromised. If anything, it was the best, most advantageous role I've ever been given... it's because the opportunity to do an interesting character on a movie of that scale is incredibly rare. The character is written by the phenomenal writer Chris Terrio. His background is not in comic books, so he was coming at it from emotion and story and created this really wonderful character, as enigmatic as he is emotionally honest."

Comic book movies have changed since the days of Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor. As a successful playwright and having recently authored his first book, Eisenberg enthusiastically buys in to the changes and Terrio's overall approach. "Now people expect the tone to be more realistic just because we live in a world where the average audience member has a sense of psychological motivations... [it raises the question] how can one man - Superman - have so much power? These are the kind of things that we talk about when we think about authoritarian states, when we talk about Vladimir Putin having a strong foothold in Eastern Europe. They're addressing geopolitics in this movie and not in a way that's pretentious or esoteric. Terrio cleverly ties in these really exciting superhero elements with these really sophisticated, philosophical themes in a much smarter, different way. That's what I like to do with my writing: to have these very sophisticated debates happen on very basic levels."

Et Irons aussi...

Irons had some interesting things to say while being interviewed by the Toronto Sun at the Toronto International Film Festival. One of those things being how long he spent shooting the highly anticipated superhero epic. Irons said:

“It was a month in Detroit, which as actually longer than you’d imagine. But big films move slowly. It’s like a huge oil tanker.”

The most interesting comments, though, were on how the actor would be playing everyone’s favorite butler. Apparently, it will be quite different from the previous adaptations we've seen on the big screen before. Irons had some pretty great comments:

“Zack Snyder, the director, wanted to create a completely different Alfred. So I felt like I didn’t have to carry any baggage from previous one’s. It’s sort of a reincarnation if youd like. I had a feeling I was creating my own Alfred, more of a man who can actually do anything if he has to.”

In preparation of playing Lex Luthor, Eisenberg says he read up on some DC Comics featuring the Superman supervillain. However, The Social Network star reassures that he was not a comic book reader prior to the role, and that might have been helpful given he wouldn't be that "obsequious comic book fan" who was "too excited to stop smiling" while shooting the Man of Steel follow-up. Regardless, Eisenberg was pleased to have an abundance of source material to look through.

"There is this trove of stuff about this guy. A lot of it's repetitive, like he always winds up on the roof of his building giving some faux benevolent talk about how he's going to change the city," he said. "It's fun to take that campy cartoony stuff and try to put it into a real person and try to reconcile the two." Eisenberg also reassured that his portrayal of Lex Luthor won't be anything like Gene Hackman's in the original Superman movies because Dawn of Justice is "so different ... it has real psychological underpinnings, and this movie character feels like a real scary person."

Eisenberg encore et toujours...

"I've always noticed the best thing to channel, as an actor, is yourself. To figure out what makes you angry, what makes you feel vengeful or righteous. Those are the feelings that Lex Luthor has. And use that as opposed to kind of watching Gene Hackman, who's a great actor obviously and played that part originally, and think, 'How can I kind of mirror that?'"

"Because the truth is, me mirroring him would just come off weird. We have different faces, different life experiences, different emotions, but what I do have - that I have more than anybody - is my own feelings, and so I use those, and then the character seems not only real, but emotional and just. He believes he's the hero of his own story - is the kind of the actor cliche - when you're playing the villain, you're the hero of your own story. That's the kind of most interesting way for me as an actor, and I think, for an audience to appreciate as well."

Affleck à Variety...

In case it wasn’t clear that expectations for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” are running extremely high at Warner Bros., star Ben Affleck put it in plain language.

“I think there is a ton of pressure on it,” Affleck said of the film, in which he plays Batman. “I mean I would be bulls—ting you to say there isn’t.”

Affleck was speaking about the March 25 film in connection with this week’s Variety cover story on Warners CEO Kevin Tsujihara. The actor-director spoke about how much he has enjoyed working with Tsujihara and how deeply involved the studio boss has been in the making of the superhero franchise picture and how he believes pushing the film into 2016 will pay off, big time.

Affleck said the press has had a lot to say about the struggles of many Warners’ films in 2015, but predicted that “Batman v Superman” will help launch a turnaround at the studio.

“You’ll see next year they are going to have a great year,” Affleck said. “They are now developing … probably the single greatest under-exploited IP asset in the entertainment business, the DC comic world. And now they have started to exploit that and you are going to see that blossom. And, when it does, it’s going to be massive.”

The Batman star praised Tsujihara for his deep involvement in “Batman v Superman,” which started with script meetings for the film.

“I was really impressed by that and by the intelligence of his notes, and the fact that he cared,” said Affleck. “It was not like some guys, especially at that level, where it would be, ‘We need a franchise movie … we just need a movie with the names ‘Batman’ and ‘Superman’ on it and it doesn’t matter what it is. For him, that wasn’t it. He was willing to take longer to make the movie to get it right to make it a movie of higher quality.”

Affleck’s commitment to the DC world is large. The star and WB rearranged the rest of his film schedule to make sure he had time for another DC spinoff, believed to be titled “The Batman,” and for his work on “Justice League,” which is expected to begin shooting next spring. Two other Affleck projects — the Gavin O’Connor-directed “The Accountant” and an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel “Live By Night” — moved to accommodate the DC-based projects.

The actor sounded both annoyed and accepting of the massive expectations that await the “Batman v Superman” debut.

“We are a very kind of instant gratification culture when it comes to analyzing the film business. And there is a lot of hyperbole involved,” Affleck said. “Nonetheless, there’s a lot of pressure on it. If it doesn’t do well, that will be extremely disappointing.”

But he said he isn’t sure what will be judged as success, concluding: “I leave that to the experts to decide.”
