At DC FanDome, The Batman director Matt Reeves revealed the Gotham PD series will take place a year before the events of the first film and follow corrupt cops. According to Gotham Central creator Ed Brubaker, the series shared on Fatman Beyond the HBO Max series will actually be about Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon:
“I was like ‘maybe they’re really going to make Gotham Central this time,’ and so I reached out to a producer who works for Matt Reeves and he says, ‘no, that’s not really Gotham Central. They’re making sure that they don’t call it Gotham Central and it’s more of a spinoff from the movie. It’s like the James Gordon show.”
"The GCDP thing, that story has story has kinda evolved. We've actually now [moved] more into the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates coming off of our movie, and some of the characters...it's like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham."
While doing the press rounds for his new Paramount Plus series Tulsa King, Terence Winter spoke about his time on Gotham Central (which later became the project on Arkham) and his exit from the series, saying that it happened as a result of creative differences.
“We were going to do a gritty cop show that happened to be set in the world of the Gotham City Police Department. I did a couple of outlines and just never really got it there, I guess, for Matt Reeves and company. We just decided to part ways rather than keep banging our heads against the wall, if we were seeing the show in a different way. But it was completely amicable and I know Joe Barton took a swing, as well. I think he ended up in the same place, and now they’re doing a show about the Penguin. I think it’s great.”
