With the shuttering of Marvel Studios’ visual development team last week, I figured it was finally time I shared some of the very early development work I got to do on #friendlyneighborhoodspiderman

Story time! So I grew up on #spiderman and #marvel - loved all the animated tv shows and would buy toys/comics whenever I could get my hands on them growing up in Bulgaria. Then in 2002 Raimi’s Spider-Man changed my brain chemistry forever. It started a love for all things superhero and comics that is still going strong to this day.

In 2021, I was fortunate enough that Marvel Studios came knocking - looking for me to do some dev work on their upcoming animated Spider Man show. A literal bucket list item. So for a few months I got to live the dream - I got to draw Peter Parker and his occasional alter ego and present my work to a team that was directly responsible for shaping my favorite thing at the time - The Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ultimately my work was merely in service of trying out a style to see if it was a good fit - the project went in a different direction (one that I think was the better call) but I was so happy to play around in this world.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some of the art I got to do! Today I’ll start with a style frame I painted.

At this stage, the project assignments were simply to find a style and it was not yet known if this spider man would be the MCU Peter or a different one - so my explorations focused on Peter and his friends.

This was my chance to try things out and see what stuck - I was looking for ways to power down his homemade suit and I had seen some concept art where he had a bike helmet and I thought it looked so fun! So that’s where the helmet and pads came in - I was always a fan of how they made him look even more inexperienced and like a kid.

My heart breaks for the incredible artists at Marvel Studios - they shaped a massive part of my life and I’m grateful to them for giving me the chance to be a very small part of that legacy. I wish them all the best.
