It’s been a while since I last posted, but Patrick Stewart’s passing has brought back decades of memories, and I wanted to share a few candid photographs from our time together.
First, my heart goes out to his wonderful wife, Sunny.
I could never recount all the experiences Patrick and I shared, both professionally and personally, in a single post. He was far more than a cast member and a friend. He was a teacher.
Every time I watched Patrick approach a role, whether onstage or on set, I learned something. His command of language, his understanding of character, the precision with which he could deliver an emotion or change the pace of a scene. He possessed a grace and confidence that only a lifetime devoted to the craft could produce, and he made even the most difficult performances seem effortless.
But beyond his extraordinary talent, Patrick was also a wonderfully fun and adventurous man.
One memory still makes me laugh. Knowing what an enormous Star Trek fan I was, Patrick invited me to dinner at his home. What he neglected to mention was that William Shatner would be joining us. I completely freaked out! Patrick knew exactly what he was doing.
There were so many moments like that over the years, and I wish I could share them all.
I feel fortunate to have known Patrick, to have learned from him, and to have called him my friend. I will cherish those memories for the rest of my life.
He will be deeply missed.
Wherever you’re going I know you’ll go boldly…I was lucky enough to work with Sir Patrick a number of times and he was always lovely to me. First as a fan and then as a colleague I count myself lucky to have gone with you for a short time.
We’ve lost a very special man. Kind and generous, with extraordinary talent and a wicked sense of humor, it was impossible not to feel charmed, enlightened and downright joyous in his presence. I’m grateful to have spent the time I did with you, Patrick. Rest well, my good friend.
